San Francisco City Hall engagement photos have been on my photography bucket list for a long time, so when Grace and Manny reached out about their engagement session, I was beyond excited to finally photograph at one of San Francisco’s most iconic locations.

The best part? Their session came together incredibly quickly.

Grace and Manny got engaged on Saturday, September 19, and just two days later, on Monday, September 21, we were walking through the doors of San Francisco City Hall for their engagement photos.

Sometimes the best sessions are the ones that come together a little unexpectedly.

Photographing an Engagement Session at San Francisco City Hall

Earlier this month, I started offering a special through TikTok for a handful of photography locations that were already on my personal bucket list. If someone booked an engagement or portrait session at one of those locations, I would waive my normal travel fee.

San Francisco City Hall was one of those locations.

As a Sacramento photographer, I've been wanting to photograph more couples throughout the Bay Area, and San Francisco City Hall felt like the perfect opportunity to combine that goal with a location I've wanted to photograph for years.

And Grace and Manny ended up being the perfect couple for it.

First Impressions of San Francisco City Hall

If you've never been inside San Francisco City Hall, prepare yourself.

The architecture is absolutely incredible. The exterior alone is impressive, but walking inside and seeing the massive dome, grand staircases, columns, windows, and intricate architectural details was a completely different experience.

As a photographer, I immediately started looking around and mentally cataloging every possible location for portraits.

There are so many options.

The only challenge was that San Francisco City Hall was busy.

There were people moving throughout the building, which meant we had to be strategic about where and when we photographed. There are plenty of beautiful areas that would make incredible backdrops, but when you're working in a public space, you sometimes have to wait for an opening or change your composition to work around the crowds.

And while Photoshop can remove an unwanted person from a background, there's definitely a point where you start asking yourself, “How many people can I realistically Photoshop out of this photo before it becomes suspicious?”

So, timing is definitely something I would consider when planning a future San Francisco City Hall engagement photography session.

Meet Grace & Manny

Then there was the best part of the session: Grace and Manny.

These two were so much fun to photograph.

You could immediately tell how comfortable they are together. They have a really sweet relationship, but they also have the kind of goofy sense of humor that makes photographing them feel less like a traditional photoshoot and more like hanging out with two people who happen to be very in love.

And there was another reason Grace was the perfect client for this particular session.

She's a photographer, too.

Grace had actually photographed at San Francisco City Hall several times before, so she knew the building much better than I did. She was able to point me toward some of her favorite areas and give me a little guidance about where we could create some of the best images.

For my first time photographing at City Hall, having someone who already knew the space was incredibly helpful.

Although, honestly, I still could have spent several hours wandering around exploring every possible photo location.

Romantic San Francisco City Hall Engagement Photos

We photographed for about an hour, beginning around 10 AM.

Even with the crowds, we were able to move around the building and create a mixture of romantic portraits, candid moments, and images that really showcased the incredible architecture of San Francisco City Hall.

One of my favorite parts of engagement photography is finding that balance between beautiful, intentional portraits and the little moments that happen naturally between poses.

With Grace and Manny, those candid moments came very easily.

Their personalities came through so naturally during the session, which made it easy to capture images that felt like them rather than simply a collection of posed engagement photos.

When Is the Best Time for San Francisco City Hall Engagement Photos?

After photographing my first session at San Francisco City Hall, one thing I already know for future sessions is that timing matters.

Our session began at 10 AM, and while we were able to create plenty of beautiful images, the building was already fairly busy.

For couples who want a little more privacy and fewer people in the background, I would consider an earlier session time when possible.

That said, even during a busier part of the day, there are still plenty of opportunities to find beautiful locations throughout the building.

If you're considering San Francisco City Hall for your engagement photos, I'd also recommend allowing your photographer some flexibility to move around. There are so many different areas to work with that being able to change locations based on crowds and available light can make a big difference.

Why San Francisco City Hall Is Such a Great Engagement Photo Location

From a photography perspective, San Francisco City Hall gives couples an incredible amount of variety without needing to travel between multiple locations.

You can create dramatic architectural portraits, romantic staircase photos, intimate close-ups, and wide images that showcase the scale of the building, all within the same session.

It's especially beautiful for couples who want their engagement photos to feel a little more editorial and timeless.

And for photographers, let's just say there is no shortage of inspiration.

I know I barely scratched the surface during this first session.

One Final San Francisco Tradition 🌭

..

After we finished the session, we walked outside and were immediately greeted by a hot dog vendor.

If you know Connor, you know exactly where this story is going.

Connor loves himself a good hot dog, especially a city dog with all the fixings, so naturally we had to stop.

Because apparently, no San Francisco photography adventure is complete without a post-session hot dog.

Then we packed everything up, hopped in the car, and headed back to Sacramento.

Another Bay Area photography adventure officially complete.

Photographing Grace & Manny’s Engagement Session

I'm so grateful that Grace and Manny trusted me to photograph this special season in their relationship, especially with such a quick turnaround after their engagement.

Getting to photograph them at San Francisco City Hall made the session even more memorable for me because it was one of those photography bucket-list locations I've been wanting to check off for a long time.

And now that I've finally photographed there?

I'm ready to go back.

If you're looking for a San Francisco engagement photographer or are considering San Francisco City Hall for your engagement photos, I'd love to photograph your story there.

Whether you're planning a traditional engagement session, a City Hall wedding, an elopement, or simply want romantic portraits in one of San Francisco's most beautiful architectural spaces, I'd love to create something personal and meaningful for you.

Congratulations again, Grace and Manny! 💍
